MURL the king of ULR Shorteners
I don't think URL shorteners require any introduction here. From Microblogging to macroblogging, It's used every where. bit.ly and tinyurl.com are the most popular url shorteners. They even provide you a profile to manage and analyze the clicks, locations of the shortened urls. Know more about URL Shorteners (bit.ly vs tinyurl.com).
Today I am to introduce you a tiny little application MURL. With MURL you can shorten any url ( link / address ) without even going to individual websites. Just enter your long url and press the button, that's it. MURL will ping the sites and will show you the message, serving all shortened urls together. MURL is developed by Gregory Beauregard.
MURL currently supports 38 URL shorteners. You can manually select which shortener you want and which you don't. Sometimes it's necessary to use multiple urls, to avoid being tagged as spammer or you want to use a shortener people are unaware of. The chances of clicking URL increases because of the curiosity for the new link (I tested with my classmates).
It's also helpful because some social networking sites and media sharing sites don't allow the link alias. They treat the alias as spam. Flickr is the best example, because of the increasing number of spams, flickr banned the use of url shortened urls such as bit.ly into comment and description.
Here is a list of all supported url shorteners MURL supports:
This is perhaps the biggest list of URL shorteners. How many from the list do you know? I wrote a short list of URLs sometime back, you may like to check. However goo.gl is not included in the list. Goo.gl only supports Google Apps, It'll be opened for public soon. Then perhaps, MURL will include goo.gl in it's list.
Feedburner makes url alias for twitter by goo.gl, which we are using now on our blog.
Now a days every website is making it's url shorteneres, because it's very easy to make one.
If you want to make your own url shortener you just need a tiny and pretty domain name such as shekh.ar, mi.ni, u.rl, ali.as, sl.im, litt.ly, bons.ai etc. and a dedicated host. A blogger at chaaps wrote how to make your own url shorter, check this out.
So Do you like MURL? Do you have any other URL shortener software like this? Do share with us here. Which is your favorite URL alias? Enjoy!Shekhar Sahu
