Yesterday, Kapil Sibal, the Union Minister of Human Resource (HR) Development, unveiled prototype of an extremely low cost computing-cum-access device like tablet. Currently the price of tablet is $35 (approx Rs1750) and is expected to fall down upto $10, even cheaper than my text books :) Indians require this low cost computing device (laptop/notebook) because over half of Indians earn less than a Dollar a day.

World's Cheapest Android Powered Indian Tablet AAKASH Launched by Govt of India

This device is aimed at learners, school and college students; teachers etc. to increase their productivity and give the computer education.

Price & Quality

For the reduction in price and enhancement in features the research team from R&D department, some IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) and some other technical institutions is constantly working and paying the best efforts. Despite of the low cost there wouldn't be any compromise with the quality of the device, it will have to fulfill certain criteria. The devices will be running a Linux OS reducing the cost of device upto great extent.

Specifications

Touch Interface
7 Inch Display
2 GB RAM memory
wi-fi connectivity
USB port
2-watt power-supply
Web-cam

Linux operating system
adding more..

Features & Other Services

One main motto of serving this device is to provide connectivity to school, colleges and universities, providing high quality e-content without any charges in the country. Even the connectivity to universities, colleges (including mine) has begun and over 8500 colleges have already connected.
High quality e-content, nearly 500 web based and video courses are available and uploaded on “sakshat”,

The Future

Many big corporates are giving good response to it. And experts from IISc Banglore, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Bompay. B.Tech and M.Tech students were guided to create the mother board for such low cost devices with ample flexibility to change components. Customizing the device accord.ing to the needs of a user.

The Indian Rival of iPad

Since the device has no objective of earning profit, Indians will get a powerful computing device even at low price. As soon as it's launched in India, Apple iPad would go into trouble. Because it's predicted to be the biggest Indian Rival of iPad. The device looks almost same as Apple iPad. I know Indians would prefer this one.

More updates coming soon....

So friends what do say? Do you think this device will increase knowledge of learners providing high quality contents? Do you think the efforts of HR Ministry is fruitful?

I must say, I'm on the queue to buy this product, a perfect alternative of iPad and a seriously portable computing option. Even cheaper than any low cost mobile that have camera. The device already created enough buzz, however I don't think iPad get effected by it as most Indian won't prefer to buy iPad which is costlier than average computing device.

You are right, In India poor people can't ever think of having a computer even ever to use it, this will uplift. About iPad the sales will be as usual but this device will get more buyers, just thinking of the population of India. :D
