If you are reading this now, you are looking for methods to avoid the ransomware attack. By the time I wrote about the discovery of kill switch for WannaCrypt 1.0, a new version WannaCry 2.0 has been launched, and this time without a kill switch.

How do I prevent the ransomware Wannacry attack 2.0?

3. Disable Server Message Block SMB
SMB comes by default enabled on windows server and client as a windows feature.

Follow the below steps to disable it from your windows computer:
Open Control Panel.
Click “Programs” in the list and then select “Turn Windows features on or off” under Programs and Features.
Look for "SMB" in the list and uncheck it.

Follow the below steps to disable SMB on servers accessible from the Internet:
In the Local Area Connection properties, use the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties dialog box to remove "File and Printer Sharing" for Microsoft Networks and Client for Microsoft Networks.

Reposting two other methods from earlier post

1. Microsoft has released a security patch against the vulnerabilities from this ransomware. But most of the computers are not up to date. First thing first make sure your operating system is updated.

2. Install an antivirus suite which supports an anti ransomware.

One such AV software is Avira Security Suite. The basic version of the suite is available for free.

Updated on May 25th
Kaspersky also launched an antiransomware tool for businesses. Which is standalone and free, that means you don't necessarily have to have their antivirus installed on the machine.
You can download the anti ransomware by registering your business here.

NO MORE RANSOM

One initiative is NO MORE RANSOM by Kaspersky, Intel Security, the National High Tech Crime Unit of the Netherlands’ police and Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre.
The goal of initiative is to educate people about prevention of ransomware attacks and help them unlock their files without paying an ransom to the hacker groups.
