What is the virtual memory?
When your system has a lack of RAM (Random Access Memory) to run a program or operating system, then windows collaborates the hard disk memory with RAM. Windows move data from RAM to the space of virtual memory called paging file. This frees up RAM and makes it available for other tasks.Newbie guide
RAM is the main internal storage area the computer uses to run programs and store data. Information stored in RAM is temporary and is designed to clear when the computer is turned off.
Windows sets the initial minimum size of the paging file at the amount of random access memory (RAM) installed on your computer plus 300 megabytes (MB), and the maximum size at 3 times the amount of RAM installed on your computer. Now, It's time to change your virtual memory.
How to Increase Virtual Memory?
- Go to your desktop and perform an Alt+double click on My Computer or Computer, this opens system properties.
- Navigate to the advanced tab and click on performance setting. Now a performance option dialogue box opens.
- Now go to the advanced tab and click on change button of the virtual memory area. For each partition of your disk
Look at the image below, it is the performance index of Windows Vista. I just have 2 Gigabyte of RAM and the rating of memory is <5 :)
Did you increase the virtual memory of your system? Is the performance of your system increased? You may share your experience or queries!
