This week was full of rumors about Facebook's new messaging service before the launch on Monday. Some bloggers called it to be a Gmail killer, on return to what Google's upcoming social network GoogleMe, just rumored to be a Facebook killer. Anyways I am assuring you neither Gmail is going to die, nor is Facebook. Facebook launched a new messaging service which is the collaboration of email, chat, and text together. But unfortunately, all of you won't be able to access the new Facebook messages by now. You have to request an invite from Facebook, which may take some time.

What's New in Facebook Messages

1. A new Facebook interface for messages, central place for all emails, chat and text/SMS. This provides a comprehensive history of all communications. Text messages you exchanged with friends and all chat conversions now are stored here just like in gtalk & Gmail. The other folder has been integrated where your board discussions, emails from people who aren't your Facebook friend. But this is going to trouble us.

2. A unique email id yourname@facebook.com which was rumored to be @fb.com. You need to create one to access the new email service.

3. Off facebook emails: now you can send emails to persons who aren't on Facebook.

4. Attachments: We can't think of any email without the attachment feature. New Facebook messages not only allow attaching images, videos, links but also external files. Which was rumored to incorporate just Microsoft Office web apps?

5. Smart Filtering: Now Facebook makes sure you see important conversations first.

6. Search: Besides searching people you can now search from the conversations you made.

7. Group Conversation: Now you can add more people to group conversion anytime, giving them full access to conversations done so far. And at any time you can unsubscribe or remove yourself from the conversation.

Get Free Email ID

Once you get the invite you can get @facebook.com email id.
go to facebook.com/?sk=inbox and click on the button "Claim your Facebook email"

You have to make sure you have got a username. Go to facebook.com/username to get a username.
So your profile link/url would be facebook.com/yourusername

Get Invite to Facebook Messages

goto [facebook.com/about/messages/] and click on the link at the bottom. The early request is considered first. So make sure you requested an Invite before Facebook Team gets tons of requests.
